Breaking the Silence

Doctor at Free Clinic Sentenced Following Sexual Assault Claims

On November 7, 2014, Dr. Jeffery Abrams was arrested on 24 counts of sexual penetration, sexual battery, and child pornography possession.

Between 2010 and 2014, victims alleged that the doctor performed improper medical exams that involved inappropriate touching, digital penetration, and sexual photographs for no apparent medical reason. Often, the victims received no indication as to why certain procedures were done, and medical records often did not reflect procedures carried out on the victims. The investigation began when one of the victims reported to police that she had been inappropriately touched and photographed during a medical examination in January 2014. As the investigation continued, more victims came forward with information of their own experiences and the charges piled up against the doctor. All of the victims reported that the assaults took place at Volunteers in Medicine in El Cajon, CA, where Dr. Abrams volunteered.

In all, 12 victims came forward to accuse him of sexual assault in a trial which resulted in a sentence of one year of house arrest, five years of probation, registering as a sex offender, and having his license permanently revoked. The original sentence of nearly 26 years was suspended, pending successfully probation completion, due to the doctor’s health problems.
