Breaking the Silence

OB/GYN convicted of rape, sexual assault

In 2003, a gynecologist in Parma, Ohio by the name of Azzam Ahmed was indicted on 53 counts of rape, sexual assault, or other similar charges. Thirty-seven women came forward with claims of sexual harassment, assault, and rape occurring during examinations in 2001 and 2002. In addition to criminal charges, multiple lawsuits were filed against the doctor for malpractice.

During the investigation, nearly 150 women came forward to report similar misconduct, and police indicated that Dr. Ahmed may have started abusing patients as early as 1977. The first victim to report him agreed to wear a wire to help police investigate, and it was due to her brave actions that police were able to make the arrest.

A jury found Dr. Ahmed guilty of two rapes, 11 counts of sexual impositions, and seven counts of sexual battery. He was originally sentenced to 45 years in prison, which was upheld in a retrial in 2006 but lowered to 11 years in a second retrial in 2012 from the same judge who originally sentenced him to 45 years. He was released January 2016.
